Edited by Jeff Patrick, in Nine Months in the Infantry Service, Robert P. Matthews documents the exploits of a Missouri Union regiment under the command of John Smith Phelps, including its participation in the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862. The Phelps Regiment defended Missouri against Confederate invasion for six months before being mustered out in May 1862, by order of Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck, whereupon numerous Phelps veterans enlisted in other Union units. John Smith Phelps, of course, went on to become one of southwest Missouri's most influential political figures. Volume includes a roster of Phelps Regiment Volunteers.
